These days it may seem difficult to find someone you’d want to date; either they’re already
taken, or it seems like they’re out of your league.
The single life is great, but after a while, it loses its luster. It especially sucks if all of your friends are dating someone; being the fifth wheel isn’t fun in the slightest.
If you’re not one to go out to bars or have the confidence and skill to chat someone up in some random place, you might be thinking about some apps you can download to find a nice date.
Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve got a few apps that are definitely worth your time, and best of all, they’re free (well, one isn’t).
#1: Coffee Meets Bagel.
This app gets it; you want a date, but don’t know where to look. Answer: your friends.
This app, developed by three sisters born in South Korea, helps singles find a date by recommending friends of their Facebook friends. Instead of meeting up with some random, you get to meet people who know people that you know.
CMB is an app that is so awesome that Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and other stuff, offered to buy it for $30 million on the show ‘Shark Tank’. Yeah, 30 million dollars.
The sisters said no without even flinching. Clearly, they think they’ve got something worth a lot more than that.
But back to how this app is gonna get you a date.
You sign in via Facebook, and it asks you some questions just like any other dating app or site does. It then recommends a person to you, and if you two like each other you can start to chat.
I said it recommends a person, not tons of people because it does that. Just one match. Well, you get one match a day. Instead of swiping through matches until you’re out of people,
CMB gives you one person per day.
These sisters are smart, man. If you get a person one day that doesn’t cut it, you have to wait 24 hours to get the next person. This keeps you coming back rather than ditching the app after a day or two.
While the people the app recommends are definitely real and could all be great dates, waiting a day to get a new person can seem kinda dull.
If you get a week’s worth of duds, it may seem a little tedious, but no one said dating was easy.
Overall it’s a great app, and if you go on a date, you can chat about how you know the friends you two have in common. Instant conversation starter.
I’m sure you’re snickering right now, but OKCupid isn’t a bad way to go to find a date.
First off, for a free app (unless you want to pay for added features like read receipts) it has cool features that you’d see on a site like Match.com.
When you set up your profile you get to share things about yourself that are good conversation starters, such as hobbies or what you’re doing with your life.
The app also has tons of questions that help evaluate you and determine your chemistry with other people based on your answers. And by tons of questions, I don’t mean a few hundred; there are over 3,000 questions, and new ones are added all the time.
You can also search for people based on criteria such as height, weight, hair color, zodiac sign, and even education.
When you get the results from searches or when you check out your matches, under each name there are a couple numbers: one is the chemistry you two have, and other is the degree to which you two are “enemies”, both represented as percents.
When you get recommended matches, you can either like or pass, and if you like them, they get a little notification saying so. If you view their profile, OKCupid lets them know you visited as well.
The cool thing about this app is that you get to see how compatible you are with someone before you even speak to each other. You can even see how your answers to questions compare with their answers to those questions.
An example of a question is, “Could you date a really messy person?” If you both answer “no”, then you know a little more about them and have a good idea on how to approach them.
This app is great with setting you up with people, but after that it’s up to you. If they don’t message back or seem interested, move on to the next person.
This cool app takes the whole dating site thing and gives it a twist; when you create your profile, you’re asked to share what your date ideas are.
Along with other information such as an “About Me” (and your religion, ethnicity, job, education, etc.), displaying your ideal first date idea is a great way to give someone an idea for who you are.
If you see a profile that seems interesting but their first date is something out of your comfort zone, you don’t have to experience it first hand and have to deal with being uncomfortable with a stranger for an hour or two.
You can also link your Facebook to your profile, although I wouldn’t recommend it. Keeping your social media and the like as far away from your dating profiles as possible is the smart way to go.
You don’t want to give a stalker or malicious person anyway to easily access you out of the dating app, where they can find intimate details about you that they otherwise wouldn’t see.
But back to the app. What this app does well is set up the first date, which can be a tricky thing for some people.
The sad part is that you have to pay for a subscription in order to message someone to set up a date. If you don’t go on a date though, you can get a full refund, so it’s kind of a winwin.
While this app may not be as detailed as OKCupid or offer people you may know like CMB, you do get the chance to have a fun first date without having to message people all the time to get to know one another.
By encouraging users to go out on a date, you get to actually meet the person and talk to each other in person, just like in the old days.
Instead of looking over one’s profile to see if you’d like them, you’re encouraged to find out about each other in person.
Overall, these apps are great for finding a date, but if you’re looking to fuck tonight then you’ll need to use a dedicated sex app. Each one has its pros and cons, and it’s up to you to pick your poison. Which one will you pick?
